Tiltrotor Takes Flight The World's First Civilian Tiltrotor Aircraft is Unveiled It's a helicopter. It's a plane. It's both? Now that's really super, man! One of the most highly anticipated aircraft in aviation history — the world's first civilian tiltrotor aircraft — has taken to the airways over the U.S. and Italy. And the uniquely configured Bell/Augusta BA609 is turning the heads of aviation and transportation industry Officials as well as business moguls worldwide. A joint effort by Bell's Flight Research Center in Texas and Augusta's flight-testing facility in Italy, the BA609 is truly a design and engineering marvel. With its rotors in the vertical position, the tiltrotor is capable of performing a full range of typical helicopter flight maneuvers including hovering, pedal turns, rearward flight, and forward flight up to altitudes of 5,000 feet and speeds of 100 knots. But when the rotors are tilted forward to the horizontal position, the aircraft is transformed into a turboprop fixed-wing airplane that can cruise at 275 knots with a maximum unrefueled range of 750 nautical miles, or up to 1,000 nautical miles with auxiliary fuel tanks. The BA609 is fully pressurized and deicing equipment comes standard. Combined with the new Collins ProLine 21 3-screen glass cockpit display, the pilot has state of the art cockpit technology to assist in flight duties. A nine-passenger aircraft, the BA609 has market applications for corporate business, offshore operators, and government customers for a variety of roles including Search-and-Rescue and internal security team insertion. The tiltrotor aircraft received FAA certification last December and, at this time Bell/Augusta has an order book of over 80 aircraft slated for more than 40 customers worldwide. To date, aircrafts already have been delivered to Elilario, an Italian helicopter public transport company; the government of Namibia; and the Aga Khan Development Network for ferrying personnel and material for construction of university campuses in Central Asia. Orders for the combination helicopter/fixed-wing aircraft have been so strong that Bell/Augusta reports its first two years of production is already committed to the existing order backlog. Completion and delivery of the first U.S. aircraft is anticipated in the first quarter of 2006. Bell/Augusta offers Customer Service Centers located throughout the world to provide spare parts, tools and maintenance services. Customers will be supported with the most effective training programs available using computer based training, flight simulators, and maintenance training devices. All parts and components for both lines will come from the exact same source, yielding aircraft that are identical whether assembled in Italy or Texas.
