Art to the Max Artist Peter Max is an American Pop Icon By Rob Sandler His vividly colorful paintings are exhibited in hundreds of museums and galleries around the world and owned by several heads of state, including five U.S. presidents. His art appeared on the first U.S. 10-cent stamp bearing the title, “Preserve the Environment.” And his patriotic-themed art --- on 235 murals along the U.S. border -- greets millions of people entering America each year. Peter Max and his art images, rendered in a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors, have become part of the fabric of contemporary American culture. He has been called a pop icon, neo Fauvist, abstract expressionist, and "Painter Laureate" of the United States. The preeminent pop artist in America for decades, Peter Max's signature art has been seen on a 600-foot stage for the Woodstock Music Festival; the covers of Verizon's New York City phone book; and a giant mural unveiled at the 2002 Winter Olympics. It also appears on a Boeing 777 jumbo jet currently flying the skies for Continental. Peter Max has also been designated the official artist for five Super Bowls, five Grammy Awards, World Cup USA, The World Series, the United Nations Earth Summit, and numerous other events. He was recently honored at the Jefferson Awards in Washington, D.C., with an award for his lifetime dedication to America and its charitable causes. At that event, Max presented the award he designed for the 30th Jefferson Awards to First Lady Laura Bush. Max's concerns for peace, the environment, human rights and animal rights are often themes for his paintings. And more recently, he created the American Heroes project. Deeply affected by the events of 9-11, Max created posters to benefit the September 11th Fund, the Twin Towers Fund, and The Survivors Fund. But he also wanted to memorialize those lost. "What began as my artistic response to the tragedy and the need to create one portrait for each fire fighter's family, became something we can now all share," Max says. "When I am painting these men, looking into their eyes each night, I feel like I know them and a tremendous sadness arises when I realize that we will never see them again." Each family will receive a portrait of their loved one as a gift from Peter Max, the IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters), Local 94, and Local 854. Max's remarkable legacy is the subject of a spectacular book, The Art of Peter Max (Abrams, October 2002), which is available at major bookstores and at The Art of Peter Max gallery in Las Vegas, located at the Forum Shops in Caesar's Palace (Terrace Level). The only gallery in the world featuring the artwork of Peter Max exclusively, it also offers the largest selection of PETER MAX paintings available anywhere. The artist will be at the Las Vegas gallery for a personal exhibition on May 28 and 29.
