Impressive Values Scrutinizing High-end Antiques There are nearly 3,200 recognized categories of antiques, ranging from advertising posters to zeppelins. Anything more than 50 years old is generally considered to be an antique, although legislation enacted in 1930 declared an item might be termed antique only if made before 1830, which exempted objects more than 100 years old from customs duties. For firearms to be classified as antiques, they need to have been made before 1898. The merchants of 14 th century Florence, Italy, are considered to be the first real collectors of antiquity. Modern collectors tend to be either aficionados or pragmatists, knowing their investment will average an annual increase of 4 percent, with highly sought-after pieces earning considerably more. This begs the question: What are the most expensive antiques in given categories? Start at the top. The highest price paid for an antique through 1990, in this case fine art, was $82.5 million for Vincent Can Gogh's Portrait of Dr. Gachet. Renoir's Au Molin de la Gallete garnered $78.1 million. Historically, however, Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa has to be considered the most expensive painting in existence. Although purchased in France in 1517 for 4,000 gold florin (about $200,000), the insurance alone has cost nearly $100 million since 1962. Beyond the bling-bling of high profile paintings, however, are some pricey winners in lesser categories. For example, a Bryants Cone Bitters container reportedly sold for $71,000 in San Francisco last February, even though the most expensive bottle sold through 1994 was a bottle of 50-year-old single malt, which went for $75,360 at a charity auction in Milan, Italy. Schroeder's Antiques Price Guide lists a Coca-Cola calendar dated 1907 for $17,000. Collectible dolls can run over $100,000 each, depending on rarity, condition, and perceived value. A gun taken from the outlaw Cole Younger after he was killed in a Minnesota bank robbery fetched a whopping $211,500 at auction. Ever more surprising was a mass-produced, 19 th century Colt revolver that sold for more than $4 million, A rare Swedish stamp that was printed in yellow instead of its normal green was sold by a 19 th century collector for a mere 50 cents, but recently sold at auction for $1.5 million. Vacheron Constantine's Kallista watch, which was designed in 1977 by artist Raymond Moretti and features 118 diamonds weighing 130 carats, sold for $9 million. A Louis Vuitton edition teddy bear was auctioned in 1994 for $190,000. A Stradivarius Kreutzer violin sold for $948,000 in 1988, while a 1938 issue of Action Comics No. 1 sold for $185,000. Topping the list of non-paintings is Bill gates' purchase of Leonardo da Vinci's notebook, The Codex hammer, for $30.8 million in 1994. For more information, visit www.msrauantiques.com.
