Surf City's Cool Hot Rods A Huntington Beach Tradition for 19 Years Anyone familiar with the lyrics of the Beach Boys classic, “Little Deuce Coupe,” gets the connection between the beach lifestyle and cool cars. It's no wonder the hot rod culture was born in Southern California, where the year-round mild weather is ideal for cruising with the top down, surf music blaring from the stereo. It seems only appropriate that in 1986, Huntington Beach – also known as SURF CITY USA TM country – was the birthplace of a tradition that has become a phenomenon. What started out quietly with four car-enthusiast pals gathering to meet for coffee and donuts every Saturday morning has grown into the largest regular gathering of custom cars in California. Now, nearly two decades after its humble beginnings, the tradition is both a local legend and the talk of car buffs around the world. From six to nine every Saturday morning, some 100 to 200 gear heads converge on the parking lot outside of Adams Avenue Donuts to swap car talk and admire each others' rides. The carnival-like atmosphere and beautiful cars attract the crowds, while the camaraderie keeps them coming back. “There's always something new to see that you didn't see last time,” said Brian Pallas, who has faithfully attended the gathering for about five years. Each Saturday he chooses between cruising up in his ‘64 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Roadster or his ‘65 Chevrolet El Camino. Locals tell of car enthusiasts who come from far-flung locales such as Australia and Europe to check out the display of hot rods, custom cars, and muscle cars, and to shoot the breeze with the dozens of fellow car fanatics. The weekly gathering also has attracted celebrities of the hot-rod world such as Art Chrisman, a famed '60s drag racer, and hot rod builders Chip Foose and “Little John” Butera. At the corner of Adams and Magnolia, everyone is welcome. “The nice thing about it is that it's a community gathering and not a competition,” said Adams Avenue Donuts owner Dave Peters, whose father opened the shop 35 years ago. Business is so good on Saturdays that Peters installed a walk-up window to accommodate the hungry and caffeine-deprived throngs. Car buffs are never disappointed with the great variety of auto delights they find here, from a brand new Masserati or Dodge Viper to souped-up Hondas and Toyotas, a meticulously restored '32 Ford, or a classic “Woodie” beach cruiser. Occasional surprises have included the appearance of concept cars and early peaks at major automakers' new models before their formal rollout.
