Master of Reverse Scrimshaw Gaetan Beauchamp's Lifelike Work By Del Corsi The canvas and technique Gaetan Beauchamp uses play a huge part in making his work come to life. It has the effect of perceived movement followed by an eerie sense of realism for the scenes and animals portrayed. A member of both Canadian and American knifemaker guilds, he regularly travels to shows in Canada, the United States and Europe. The wildlife and countryside experience in those early years played a significan role in his artistic endeabours. One of Gaetan's most spectacular pieces is a charging bull elephant on the handle of a knife. It is so realistic that your can almost hear the beast charging. Approximately 12 inches in height and 6 to 8 inches in width, the pieces Gaetan create evolve into highly detailed wildlife scenes. Making this all come together can be a bit of a challenge for this master artist. Instead of working with the shadows on something like ivory, he now must work with the light. The process can be compared to the development of a film negative. Gaetan's creations, nonetheless, are worth a thousand words, as each time you moves the piece the eyes follow you or the colors change. The shop Gaetan works out of is locatied in his hometown of Stoneham, Quebec. Outside his back door, the Huron river flows, creating a tranquil environment. It provides a nice break from the noise of the grinding machines and gets the creative juices flowing prior to another session in the studio.
