HIT THE WAVES Seems like designers have all taken to the waves this Spring, with nautical, sailor, and crisp beach-y elements surfing down the runways. All together these aquatic elements, mixed with splashes of color, are like a refreshing breeze … a sea breeze. "Spring 2005 was inspired by a yachting trip I took this past summer with friends and family,” says Tommy Hilfiger, who infused his menswear line with the freshness of a jet set look so prevalent at European ports from St. Tropez and Monaco to Portofino and Capri. The crazy electric pink and lime green colors that burst forth from his H collection are controlled by clean and classic yachting attire, which all adds up to an ageless timeless look. Even the smarter, more formal pieces such as the double-breasted jacket (a classic staple still done within the parameters of midnight blue sea tone) does not go beachcombing too far from the theme. And the Nautica man was on the move … most likely by sea. Starting with the prep school powder blue and baby pinks, and then by way of seersucker and lightweight naval sweaters. Mixed with flat front trousers in soft yet rugged cotton twill, these all sang to the tune of pure East Coast Americana.
