George Clooney Hollywood Heartthrob with Heart By Kaya Morgan It's been a bumpy ride to the top for actor-writer and director-producer, George Clooney, even though he hails from a show biz family. This Lexington, Kentucky-born son of TV newscaster and talk show host Nick Clooney, and nephew of singer-actor Rosemary Clooney, has been named one of the "Fifty Most Beautiful People," "Best Dressed Star," and "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine, and has appeared on every Best Dressed list. After initially enrolling at Northern Kentucky University to major in Broadcast Journalism, followed by an unsuccessful tryout for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, Clooney made a turn towards the bright lights of tinsel town. But whether it's his pet pot-bellied pig, "Max," or hanging with "the guys" crashing at his Hollywood bachelor pad, the gags he pulls, the gals he dates, or the way he really knows how to dress, there is much more to George Clooney than merely an incorrigibly charming and drop-dead-gorgeous guy. Behind that eternally boyish grin lurks the drive and depth of a true Hollywood aficionado. Not counting an appearance on his father's talk show at age 5, Clooney got his first break in the business when his cousin, actor Miguel Ferrer, helped him land a bit part in the 1982 feature film, And They're Off . Not long after, he moved to Los Angeles to study acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse. But success was slow in coming. Clooney toiled on the sidelines for almost 15 years before a few spot appearances on the small screen in the TV drama Sisters and sitcoms The Facts of Life and Roseanne , as well as in the movie, Return of the Killer Tomatoes!, led to his breakthrough role as the handsome heartthrob, Dr. Doug Ross, in Michael Crichton's NBC medical drama, ER (1994-99). His penchant for films drew him to star with Michelle Pfeiffer in One Fine Day (1996), and he turned in a critically acclaimed performance in Quentin Tarantino's From Dusk Till Dawn (1996). Then his career turned really hot in 1997, when he garnered his first big bucks, box office hit and earned $10 million as the caped crusader in Joel Schumacher's Batman and Robin . Clooney's reputation as a hard-working actor who gives every role his best has landed him roles in 20 films over the years, including Three Kings and The Perfect Storm . He won a Golden Globe in 2000 for "Best Supporting Role in a Comedy or Musical" ( Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? ), and a 1996 MTV Movie Award for "Best Breakthrough Performance" ( From Dusk Till Dawn ). After his failed marriage to Talla Balsamin (1989-92), and despite his insistence that he wants to remain a perennial bachelor, the plethora of Hollywood babes he has dated would make even Leonardo DiCaprio jealous. His current love? "Right now I guess I'm totally devoted to my work. That's the love of my life," he says. Clooney is also known for the loyalty and generosity to close friends he displayed when he bought each of them (and himself) a new Harley Davidson motorcycle. Clooney made his directorial debut in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2003), reeling in the talents of Drew Barrymore and longtime pal Julia Roberts. Rather than choosing a romantic comedy or adventure flick he could just skate through, he pleased critics and fans alike when he delivered an edgy, and remarkably assured drama based on the 1984 memoirs of TV game show producer Chuck Barris, creator of The Gong Show (who once claimed to be a CIA assassin). Clooney's production company, Maysville Productions, already has an impressive list of films to its credit or in the making. Something of an anomaly in the business, George says he never bought into the "big star thing," but instead still thinks of himself as a "regular guy" who just happens to be a star.
