Diddy" Combs Leonardo Dicaprio Energy Defined By Ric Osuna A member of the three-time NBA Championship team the Los Angeles Lakers, Derek Fisher generates as much “buzz” off the court as he does on it. Derek’s signature style, vibrant personality and energetic approach have taken him far. Born on August 9, 1974, Derek was shooting hoops by age three, whereas by age six he already knew his first love was basketball. In college, Derek’s passion for the game continued to grow, as he was named the 1995-96 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year. During his junior and senior years, Fisher led his college team in scoring, assists, steals, minutes and free throws, earning him a unanimous slot to the All-Sun Belt Conference Team. He currently holds the title of being the second-ranked player in the history of Arkansas-Little Rock for points, assists and steals. After graduating with a degree in communications in 1996, Derek began his professional career as a first-round draft pick for the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played 80 games as a rookie. Believing that hard work was the key to improving, Derek continued the momentum he started in college. Hence, in the 2000-2001 season, he was averaging 11.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists in the first 35 minutes of a game. By the 2001-2002 season, Derek was ranked number two in the NBA for three-point field goals within the first 48 minutes of a game. While at the NBA playoffs, he started every game, helping the Los Angeles Lakers earn another championship. According to Derek, his team finishing as champs “made everything worthwhile.” For Derek Fisher, the best part of being a pro-basketball player is the ability to do what he loves, whereas the financial rewards are secondary to playing the game. Despite his confidence that his stardom and financial security have not changed him, people now look at Derek in a different way because he is a champion, celebrity and star athlete. The impact he has on young fans is not forgotten. Although he is a champion, Derek fisher has not lost touch with them. On one occasion, Derek was driving down the street when he spotted a little girl wearing a Lakers’ jersey with his number on it. Derek stopped, and to the amazement of the little girl and her party, this LA Laker autographed her jersey. Off the court, Derek loves to watch football, baseball and tennis. As for leisure activities, golfing and fishing rank up there with videogames. In fact, Derek considers himself the John Madden champion of the Los Angeles Lakers. A hip-hop music lover, Derek also enjoys jazz and classical music, especially since he used to play trumpet in a band. Although Derek was recently named one of the most eligible bachelors, the title has not gone to his head, reasoning, “As a celebrity, living a public life, you have to be a little careful whom you spend your time with.” Ego is not a big player in Derek’s life, as he seeks a woman excited about her life rather than his. Derek routinely devotes himself to worthy causes and participates in community organizations, such as the American Cancer Society, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and Big Brothers and Sisters. By using his celebrity image and corporate sponsorships, Derek hopes to establish the Fisher House. At Derek’s foundation, children will be taught the importance of achieving their educational goals through a college education. At the end of August, Derek plans to host his first annual celebrity event in Little Rock with the proceeds going to the Fisher House Foundation. Offering insight into himself, his rise to glory and his need to establish his foundation, Derek explains, “If I had to pick a motto it would be ‘never be satisfied.’ My parents instilled that in me a long time ago; not being complacent and satisfied with where you are today. You should always look towards tomorrow and what you can do to better yourself or better your position. It really has nothing to do with making more money, but always striving to be the best at what I do.”
