Land Rover's LR3 Packs a Powerful Punch ‘Terrain Response' System Handles All Road Conditions If your travels take you to the dunes of the Sahara Desert or the sands of Daytona Beach , Land Rover's new LR3 and its “Terrain Response” system will get you home safely and in style. The LR3, the first Land Rover under the guise of the Ford Motor Company, is loaded with power (300 horsepower, 4.4 liter V8 engine) and technology. The LR3 comes in two models, the SE and HSE, and both feature a six-speed electronic automatic transmission equipped with Command Shift, which allows the driver full control over gear changes. For drivers seeking an off-road experience or just traveling local roads during inclement conditions, the “Terrain Reponse” system allows for drivability and control over a variety of surfaces. The driver selects one of five terrain settings – general driving; grass/gravel/snow; mud/ruts; sand; and rock – via a rotary knob on the center console. The system automatically selects the vehicle's traction aids – ride height, engine torque response, hill descent control, electric traction control, and transmission settings. “A true Land Rover, the LR3 benefits from a clarity of purpose and conviction that is evident from its clean design, versatility, and outstanding driving experience,” said Richard Beattie, executive vice president, Land Rover North America. “Like all new Land Rovers, its on-road composure is on a level with its outstanding offroad capability.” The LR3 was designed from the inside out so a great deal of attention was given to passenger comfort and ergonomics. Front row bucket seats can be electrically adjusted and are trimmed with leather upholstery. The second row bench seats three and is set higher in Land Rover's “stadium seating” configuration. The optional front-facing third row of seats is set higher so all passengers can see forward as well as upward through the Alpine windows in the rear roof section. If you like to ride with your tunes, the LR3 also excels with a 240-watt harman/ kardon AM/FM stereo system with a six-disc in-dash CD changer and nine speakers (the HSE model features 14 speakers). A state-of-the-art touchscreen DVD-based navigation system is available with both 2D and 3D map displays. Other Land Rover features include optional adaptive headlights that swivel with the direction of travel to illuminate the road ahead; park distance warning sensors; a day tent that encloses the rear hatch; a sliding load space floor; and wood grain interior enhancements. The cost of the LR3 begins at $44,995 so when you hit the beach, you will be able to afford that bottle of SPF15 sun lotion.
