Running About in Style Grand-Craft Marries Craftsmanship with Convenience When visiting a boat show, some sea-going enthusiasts gravitate toward the fiberglass mega-yachts. Some can't wait to take the helm of a three-mast sailboat. Others make a beeline toward the fine craftsmanship and Old World charm of a wooden boat. Grand-Craft builds some of the finest mahogany runabouts that sail the Great Lakes and other inland bodies of water. The company began its existence in 1979 with a historical liaison to the legendary Chris-Crafts that were built in Holland , Michigan , in the late 1930s. The original wooden boats of the early 1900s were the innovative creation of Christopher Columbus Smith. The grandson and great-grandson of that famous original boat builder became involved with Richard Sligh, whose knowledge and skills in wood boat building and appreciation of what a new wooden boat could offer, were put to action. It has proven to be a worthy combination. The company has been solely in the hands of Richard Sligh since 1984. Since that time, the process of combining the best of what a wood boat has to offer – timeless beauty and excellent performance on the water -- has been updated with what today's boater desires most … low-maintenance. This is accomplished by incorporating a bonding agent to the wood surfaces to prevent water from entering the hull. The boats can be put in the water at any time, without “soaking up,” a procedure that was required years ago. New varnishes and other finishing products greatly reduce the maintenance requirements that plagued the boats of yesteryear. Philippine mahogany is the signature wood of a Grand-Craft. Each piece is hand-selected on the basis of consistent reddish-brown color, straightness of grain for side planking, and “ribbon” grain, when desired, for the transom. Philippine mahogany is preferred for its density, tenacity, and resilience, as well as its beauty. It is ideal for absorbing the shock of water against the hull. Grand-Crafts are handcrafted using traditional methods of boat building. A keel is laid, frames set up, planking secured with over 6,000 screws to a boat. Each screw is covered with a “bung,” a mahogany circle of wood put in place by hand over the screw top and lined up to match the grain for even staining. Heavy chromed hardware or highly polished stainless steel is a natural complement to the richness and warmth of mahogany. A number of the pieces on the Classic models are exact replicas of the old Chris-Crafts. The lines of a Grand-Craft reveal gracefulness and exquisite form, from the slicing bow to the tapering stern. The arc of decking provides a flattering display of mahogany. The hull bottoms have been modified for a smooth ride with the bow arc deflecting water away from the passenger area. The boats are framed for strength in “taking the chop” of the water, providing a smooth ride. Traditional boat-building methods mean expertise in pattern making, cutting, assembling, and fitting that is essential to the soundness of construction. Handcrafting skills signify that master craftsmen use considerable skill in milling, constructing, fitting, and finishing these boats. The Grand-Craft's finish, applied in an atmosphere-controlled room, consists of many coats of varnish with an ultra-violet filter that increases protection to the wood. The company incorporates steering and controls noted for durability, instant response, and positive-handling ability. The engines can produce speeds up to 50 mph. Grand-Crafts are built in open-cockpit Sport design, triple-cockpit Classic models, enclosed Commuter styles with an open stern, and other custom yacht designs. They are backed with a five-year limited warranty and take six months to a year to build.
